We want to get everyone to zero carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier. As a company, we’re aiming to reach that target by 2045. And we believe we can get there by working together and helping each other.
Our People & Planet Plan aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable future for our communities, our planet and each other.
Our goals that accelerate action on issues that matter deeply to our business and society, and where we’re well-placed to make a world of difference – from achieving net zero and creating the diverse and inclusive team we need to get there, to making a big difference in the communities we’re all part of. In doing so, we can contribute positively to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and achieve our purpose of energising a greener, fairer future for all.
Supporting every colleague to be themselves to better serve our customers and communities.
We want to create an engaged team that reflects the full diversity of the communities we serve.
That’s why we want all company and senior leaders to reflect 40% women, 20% ethnically diverse, 20% disability, 2% LGBTQ+ and 20% ex-service by 2030 (in line with Census data for working populations). Since launching this goal in 2020, we’ve secured steady gains of up to 5%. Better recruitment and retention practices provided an initial boost, and we’re now focused on growing a more inclusive culture. This requires systemic change across our business, sector and society, which we recognise may take time. In particular, diversifying senior levels and growing disability representation are areas to work on. Attracting more women into engineering is also a big opportunity given our large Field engineering team reflects the existing male-dominated market, which impacts our overall Group gender split.
We’ll continue to embed our Positive Action Plans to attract, promote and retain more diverse talent.
Having moved away from most of our carbon intensive assets to provide low carbon services and solutions for customers, we emit around 70% less carbon than a decade ago.
Towards our net zero target, our total GHG emissions decreased by 20% against the 2019 base year which is on track with our goal. This was, however, slightly down on the reduction achieved the previous year and was mainly due to security of supply driving an increase in gas production, generation and storage. Sustainable savings were also secured with the gradual roll-out of our electric vehicle road fleet alongside those from across our property portfolio.
We’ll continue to drive emissions out of our business and identify opportunities wherever possible to support the adoption of lower carbon energy – from achieving net zero gas production and storage by 2035, to having a zero emission vehicle fleet by 2030.
